Last year, only 26% of children in Illinois demonstrated readiness in all three areas of the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS), and 39% of children did not show readiness in any of the areas. We need educators with ideas for innovative solutions to help us close this gap for our state’s youngest learners! This yearlong grant initiative is an opportunity for educators whose work impacts children in pre-K and Kindergarten to develop and lead a project to improve kindergarten readiness.  Successful applicants will receive a leadership stipend, a $5,000 grant, and leadership coaching as they implement their project. Applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience and currently work in an education setting (for example--teacher, administrator, district employee, community leader, etc.) Potential innovations could fall under aligned teaching and learning (between pre-K and kindergarten teachers), aligned assessment and data use (between pre-K and kindergarten, schools within a district, between districts, and/or across the state), or strengthened cross-sector partnerships (between families, communities, schools, and teachers).

This grant is to spur innovations to common challenges that schools, districts, and communities face regarding kindergarten readiness. Some promising ideas to encourage Kindergarten Readiness can be found in the Kindergarten Transition Advisory Council Report (page 6), or Mastering KIDS: Voices from Field. Additionally, here are some brief example projects to spur your creativity:
Example Projects
  • In-class: A strong K teacher who successfully implements play-based learning works with 4-5 of her peers to help them integrate play into their teaching
  • District: A strong teacher (K or pre-K) brings together the K and Pre-K teams to develop vertically aligned curriculum, opportunities for K and Pre-K teams to coordinate with each other around transitions, and ensure a smooth transition from Pre-K to K.
  • Community: A community launches a literacy initiative providing reading materials in doctor’s offices, laundromats, schools, and more.
