The National Teacher Policy Cabinet offers a fulfilling fellowship for current classroom teachers to gain high-level policy skills far beyond conventional advocacy. Cabinet members learn how to lead and create tangible policy opportunities, including how to read complex legislative texts, collaborate directly with Members of Congress and their staff, ideate policy ideas, and strategize real-world change. This impactful work is inherently demanding: we operate on the Congressional calendar, meaning the commitment is rigorous and often extends outside the traditional school day and year. This schedule requires substantial flexibility, given the constantly evolving dynamics and developments of Congress and D.C. at large. The National Teacher Policy Cabinet enables teachers to become leaders who drive systemic change; these experiences are often career-defining.
Over the years, our fellows have had engagements with:
Former Secretaries of Education, Dr. Miguel Cardona, John B. King, and Margaret Spellings;
Senators Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) and Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NV);
Representatives Madeline Dean (D-PA) and Burgess Owens (R-OH); and others.
During their fellowship experience and beyond, fellows have:
Participated in the inaugural Bipartisan Policy Center Teacher Advisory Cohort
Participated in Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms
Received recognitions, such as the National Center for Learning Disabilities Every Day Champion
Led roundtable discussions with Representative Susie Lee (D-NV) and Senator Jack Reed (D-RI)
